ARTIST LAT YIP   by Van Thuan Huynh

“ Although not as magnificent as the Titanic. We have conquered the ocean ”
- Tribute to Freedom.

It has already been 30 years since many people fled Vietnam by boat in search of freedom. The memories are still very real to all who were brave enough to take on the mass ocean.

Lat Yip would like to thank the UNHCR, all government, charity organizations, news media and people of the world, who have helped and supported him and all the boat people in the past.

This gives Lat Yip the opportunity to draw the beautiful history of a heroically tragic page, and share our experience through arts painting in a freedom country after thirty years.

Lat Yip has produced many passionate and beautiful paintings that depict his journey fromVietnam.

Artist Lat Yip would like to share his experiences through his oil paintings that span over 30 years.

Our life is like a boat on sea
If you experience the waves, don't turn around
The numbers of conditions are the number of experiences
The land of paradise is in front of our eyes
~Taken from the description of the painting “Don't Be Afraid”

Lat Yip is an advocate of the arts as a tool for learning and conversations flowed freely at his painting exhibition – April 30 th and May 1 st 2005 in Toronto , as well as his workshops at Burnhamthorpe Public School at Mississauga on Friday, June 17 th 2005 .

Lat Yip inspires his artistic vision through “ one heart, three intentions ” (fixed intention, free-handed intention, unexpected intention) and his original works while sharing his creative process and engaging the student participants in active, meaningful ways that help them to build up their self-confidence, to heighten their personal and intellectual courage and to keep in touch with their feelings and their self-worth.

His creativity is a vital energy to foster in each student and the students reveled in the opportunity to experiment his vision.

They listened to his “boat people's” story, drew the boat in the ocean and created images in their minds. They realized that when they listened to a story, they tended to imagine themselves as floating in the ocean looking down on the boat below – quite similar to where Lat Yip was in his boat.

Lat Yip came up with the idea “ one heart, three intentions ” in order to share his quality arts to young people in the community. His unique vision will help children to develop productive and creative talent and personal growth, inspiring children for quality of life in our community.

How our community and parents view the kinds of benefits to art education?
•  Greater ability to express emotions
•  Increased skills in the arts and abilities in other curriculum strands ;
•  Increased confidence and self-esteem in children ; (based on the comments of Burnhamthorpe Public School community and the exhibition's survey April 30 th – May 1 st 2005 in Toronto )

Helping others is giving to our future
